실체와 관념의 간극을 드로잉하는 여행자

“숨은 시간의 방”, “숨어있는 방“, “시간 창고”등 일련의 박혜수 작업들은 이미지나 개념에서 원형적 보편성을 가진다.

다이알 로그의 형식을 취한 작품 주제 “잠겨 있는 방“, ”묻지 않은 질문-듣지 못한 대답“,은 관객의 소중한 기억을 떠올리게하는 질문과 대답을 강요한다. 강요라는 단어를 사용하였으나 사실은 일상에서 소중한 체험의 기억 또는 지극히 보편적인 이야기보따리를 끌어내기 위한 방법론인 셈이다.

작가가 의도하는 표현이 구체적이든 추상적이든 중요한 것은 일반적인 개념이 아닌 나 또는 많은 사람들의 체험에 의한 이미지라는 것이다. 박혜수의 질문에 따라 토해내는 관람객의 어쩌면 그다지 의미가 없는 화제 거리 아니면 농담과 같은 답들은 삶을 살찌우고 풍요롭게 하는 원형적인 이미지이며 철학이다. 또한 그것이 추상적 또는 개념적인 이미지일지라도 내면적으로는 구체적인 모습을 가지며 관람객이라고 하는 많은 사람(집단)에게 어떤 역할을 하는 종교적 의미를 갖는다.

박혜수는 “숨은 시간의 방”에서 질문에 대한 답을 알고 있으면서 또 다른 답을 기대하고 동시에 그 답에 대한 소중한 의미의 길을 권유하지만 실은 강요하고 있는지도 모른다. 이미 작품 “숨은 시간의 방”에는 사람들이 체험한 많은 파편의 리얼리티가 잠재되어 있고 관념적 상상력을 미래로 이끌고 가는 보이지 않는 힘이 작용한다. 관람객을 이끌고 가는 힘에는 타인의 존재를 존중하는 배려와 인식이 자연스럽게 작가의 내면에 스며있다. 그는 작업을 바라보는 이들에게 자신을 읽게 하고 행위를 관조하게 하는 철학적 자세를 제공하면서 한편으로는 질문의 답변과 같은 계기 아니면 어떤 의도된 공간을 제공한다.

자신이 살아가는 방법에 관해 그것을 실행해 가는 것을 철학자 융이 보편성을 갖는 개성화의 과정이라고 말하는 것처럼 박혜수는 일련의 그의 작품에서 타인에 의한 보편성의 기억이나 감정, 느낌을 여러 방법의 장치와 오브제를 스테에오 타이프 형식으로 증여하고 그에 대한 결과물을 되돌려 받아 그것을 다시 한번 새롭게 연출하고 해석해 냄으로서 정신적 치유와 생산적 단계를 암시해준다. 이미지의 경우 볼 수 있다는 것을 생각 할 수 있는데 그것은 무엇보다 지각되는 존재의 모든 것으로서의 신체이고 지각되는 모든 것은 신체성과 끊을 수 없는 관계를 갖는다.

박혜수는 사물이나 대상을 보고 본질을 확인한 후 관객을 참여시키고 이미지를 형상화 한다.

사람이 자신의 사는 방법에 대해 생각하는 것을 개성화의 과정이라고 융이 말 했듯이 박혜수의 작품에서도 개인적이며 보편성을 갖는 표현의 개성화를 열고 있다. 서로 상호작용하는 소통의 공간 즉 사고의 큐브(작품)가 있고 그 속에 박혜수와 관람객이 공존하며 그 실체와 관념이라고 하는 간극의 틈-공존의 공간-에서 이미지의 원형이라고 하는 1차원의 지나간 많은 기억의 레이어가 4차원으로 얽기고 겹쳐진 현실을 그가 드로잉을 하고 있다는 생각을 하게 한다. 하지만 한편으로는 지워지고 사라진 기억이나 체험을 숨어 있는 방이라고 하는 공간에 의도적으로 출현시키려는 것은 감성적이거나 너무 관념적일 수 있는 요소를 다분히 안고 있는 것도 사실이다.

인간은 시간과 공간에 이미지를 창조한다. 2007년 이탈리아의 시칠리에서 발표한 박혜수의 작품 “사라지는 것들"은 망각이나 환영의 재현 또는 의도적으로 확인하려고 하는 제스처가 읽혀지기도 한다.

병을 앓는 것처럼 창조는 아픔이 동거한다. 작가는 아픔의 병을 체험하고 산다. 어떤 관념에 몰두하다 보면 신체보다 정신적 아픔을 앓게 되는데 박혜수 역시 작품을 제작하면서 정신적 아픔을 짊어지고 사는 작가임에 틀림이 없다.

사람은 누구나 창조를 꿈꾸고 산다. 그 중에서도 작가는 자신의 인생을 창조한다. 박혜수는 물질문명 시대를 살아가는 현대인의 심리 치유를 창조하는 작가이며 설계사이며 한편으로는 여행자이기도 하다.

고양스튜디오와 금호스튜디오의 작가 7명으로 구성된 기획전입니다. 한 작가등 한 공간을 독립적으로 사용하고 있습니다.

이번 전시는 작가 + 작가 란 프로포즈 형식을 띄고 있으며 저는 전수천 선생님께서 추천해주셨습니다.

제 전시장은 금호미술관 1층입니다.

선보이는 작품은 지난 소마드로잉센터에서 진행한 Project 대화 展의 내용을 기반으로 그때 소개한 내용들을 1/4정도의 작은 아카이브 공간을 만들고 이와 관련된, 작가적 해석이 들어간' 대화'에 대한 설치작품 두 점이 함께 설치했습니다.

사람들이 즐겨 하는 대화 중 하나인 ‘소문’에 대해 말을 하고 있다. 확실치 않은 이야기를 비밀스럽게 하는 과정을 반복하다 보면 세상 누구나가 알게 되어버리는 이 이상한 형식의 대화가 요즘 가장 즐겨 하는 사람들의 소통 이라고 느껴진다.

작품은 전시장 전체에 설치된 연통들이 서로 연결되어 있고 그 내부엔 스피커와 마이크가 설치되어 있어 작은 소리일지라도 모두가 알게되어버리는 울림을 가지게 된다.

그렇게 사람들이 즐겨 하는 소문은 결국 누군가의 뒷담화 거리가 된다. 하지만 정작 뒷 담화의 주인공이 그곳에 나타나면 사람들은 일제히 그 대화를 멈추며 이상한 정적(靜寂)을 만들어 버린다.

작품은 그러한 침묵의 상황을 오브제를 통해 재현하고 있다.

때문에 관객은 자신의 움직임 때문에 테이블위의 이들의 대화를 들을 수 없다.

전시가 바쁜 일상 속에서 삶을 한번 되돌아보고자하는 사색의 기회를 갖게하는 주제입니다.

이번엔 상반기 그룹전에서 계속 선보이고 있는 '무엇이 사라지고 있는가' 작품이 약간의 설치 방법을 바꾸어 보여집니다.

관객은 작가가 미리 마련해둔 책상위의 동화를 분쇄기에 넣어 날려 바닥에 무덤처럼 쌓이게 하는 관객참여 작업입니다.

설문작업은 2010 4~5월 월곡산 일대에서 진행됐으며 예비 큐레이터인 김미혜, 정서희 학생이 도와주셨습니다.

이제 자신의 꿈을 향해 내닫아야할 대학교 4학년에 가장 많은 이들이 자신의 꿈을 포기하는 것을 아는지..

Conversation Piece––PARK Hyesoo Communicates through her Work

For me, "Home" is a space of chaos. Is home a space which eats people's dream? Home is a space which protects people. However at the same time, it is a space where people let themselves stay and locked up and put their dreams on hold. So the first reason why people could not fulfill their dreams is their home.1

PARK Hyesoo has inquired repeatedly about “HOME” in her works (fig. 1). In these works, she uses home, where a family lives together, as a motif to represent “the everyday”, “the nearby environment” and “the minimum unit of interpersonal relationships.” Considering it as an ambiguous entity or an existence with some negative aspects that can be universally shared and emphasized, she deals with such themes as loss, oppression and control through home-related subjects.

In Park’s 2008 exhibition “Locked Room” (Selected Emerging Artists) at the Seoul Museum of Art, motifs related to home recurrently appeared. For example, in the Forgotten, Thus Lost Ones -- series (2008) (fig. 2, 3), depicted on the clear acrylic sheets were photographs of Park and her mother standing before an elementary school gate on her first school day, her previous house, her class, and so on. The acrylic sheets are part of water tanks that contain water. As the light bulbs above shed light, the images on the acrylic sheets cast their blurry shadows on the wall. As the motors installed on the tanks shake the water, the images become even blurrier, evoking the obscurity of old memory. As we accumulate various experiences and new memories, it becomes difficult for us to remember the pleasant experiences of family and the faces and names of old friends as time goes by. The values of these memories are re-appreciated only after we find they are lost, when we acquire a new perspective in a different phase of life. Park often deals with these motifs as if they are absent or lost, and the sense of loss is suggested in this work in a more or less sentimental manner. However, her repetitive use of these motifs seems to lead us to question if there is anything lacking in our daily lives rather than to simply evoke homesickness or nostalgia.

At the exhibition of these works, she conducted a questionnaire with the following four questions about loss:

(1) If you could meet one thing or person you lost in your life again, what or who would that be?

(2) Why did you choose that thing/person?

(3) How did you lose that thing/person?

(4) Do you remember that thing/person well? Can you describe what it/he/she looked like?

About a thousand answers were collected before the exhibition opened and became the material for her exhibition. Park also used the answers in a more direct way in Unasked Question, Unheard Answer (2008) (fig. 4) by typing them on a paper roll and sending them into a shredder in the room across the partition so that they eventually become a heap of scraps. Park still continues to conduct the same questionnaire along with other questions through her website.

These are questions about loss that we seldom think of and ask others. Nevertheless, she asks these questions that require each respondent to look back at his/her personal history and inner self, and then make the act of collecting replies itself her own project or use the answers as materials for her work. She not only conducts a survey of a large number of anonymous people, but also listens to people chatting in places such as cafés, buses or benches in parks. The conversations she hears in these places are mostly non-committal and harmless, simply in order to be nice to each other or to lie to oneself at times, or to enjoy the act of chatting itself. Park discovered one day that these everyday conversations are much the same. Though they certainly lubricate communication, aren’t the speakers valuing the smoothness of conversation rather than the honesty of their words too much because of their desire to avoid conflicts and serious thinking? This tendency is especially conspicuous in the close relationships between parents and children, friends, and teachers and students, all of which sometimes need to have serious and honest discussions, or even arguments. Park considers that the Korean society give priority to what others think but are poor at expressing themselves.

Conducting surveys and creating works of art based on the results––at this point, this communication is not mutual. While appreciating the personal differences and individuality of each respondent, Park only throws questions and uses the answers as materials for her work without analyzing them or responding to them. In turn, the answers used in her works become the questions to the spectators of her exhibition. The artist or the work asks questions that we can seldom ask, as if the exhibition is a place to express these inquiries in public. Probably more important for Park is to collect answers and to give chances to many people to speak out through her work than to analyze and interpret the results of her questionnaires.

Park had intended to have a similar kind of project here at ACAC as well but she didn’t realize it because it would take far more time in a different country with a different language, and it is hard to apply the Korean-grown concept of the project to Japan immediately. Besides, the woodsy environment and the unique architecture of ACAC were more impressive to her than the people in the town, as Park had intended to incorporate the environment into her work. In addition, it is also possible that during her residence, she had renewed her interest to the theme of “HOME,” which is the title of the exhibition. As a result, she dealt with “HOME” from the perspectives of loss and alienation rather than that of communication.

Forget-Me-Not, which was exhibited on the Water Terrace surrounded by the semicircular Exhibition Hall, is based on The Little Match Girl by Hans C. ANDERSEN. Home is an object of eternal aspiration and yearning to those who do not have it while it is ordinary and even troublesome to those who do. The famous story of the match-vending girl who dies dreaming of the warmth of an ordinary family gathering represents this.

The Forest of Missing Children, installed in the Open Stage, is also a work that evokes the ephemerality of ordinary happiness and its value by representing something lost. Faces, which are based on the portraits of missing children picked up from the website of an organization searching for them, are depicted on an acrylic board. These images do not emerge unless the sun shines in from certain angles. And yet, even if the sun shines, they appear only for seconds or minutes and soon get deformed and disappear. This suggests what the parents of the missing children would think––if they can see their loved ones again, if they can accurately remember their faces, if they can identify their grown-up faces, and so on.

Forget-Me-Not, which is composed of a white statue of a girl standing in the Water Terrace all alone as if refusing any color, with a little light in her hands surrounded by white flowers like water-lilies with petals molded with shells, and The Forest of Missing Children, which emphasizes the transience and sorrow of the subject with the portraits of children, as lifelike as photographs, that appear on an acrylic board only for a moment. The stories behind these works are obvious and well-known to us so it is easy to imagine the tragedy behind. Her two beautiful installations at ACAC represent the tragic cases of the loss of “HOME,” her frequent theme, in a simple and straightforward manner.

Meanwhile, this seemingly simple presentation of well-known stories reminds us of the questions about loss that Park has asked many times for her exhibition, “Locked Room.” While those questions and answers are seldom exchanged in our daily conversations, everyone has a story or two about the losses that he/she has experienced. Nobody lives without experiencing major losses when detached from his/her mother at birth and when separated from the world by acquiring language. In other words, loss is thus universal and a hole that is present in everyone’s interior. Thus the query about it is inspiring and stirs our emotion. What loss evokes may form a contrast with what home evokes.

The various questions Park asks are therefore internal and yet have functions as apparatuses for collecting responses. She explained the reason she makes original perfumes for visitors and conducts a psychological exam in her project Ask Your Scent is that they are devices to attract people that are usually indifferent to art to her exhibition and have them see her work.2 The practical purpose of doing these was to gather as many words and many characteristics as possible. As the collected scents are eventually used for her next work, the custom-made perfumes and psychological exam are mere devices to acquire the visitors' scents. Popular stories and tragedies that win public sympathy are accessible. Because such stories are universal, people turn their concern to the tragedy of the stories and then to their own sorrow or family matters.

Park’s use of popular stories about “loss” to delineate the problems and her conducting surveys about “issues about the essence of human life” to promote the respondents to think are basically similar. The statue of the sad-looking girl and the portraits of lovely children attract the public attention with generous accessibility. However, these are different from mere psychological exams or documentaries because these productions are not their goal; rather, they seek to promote the viewers to produce sequels of the stories or create others. They are conversation pieces as family portraits based on the loss of family.

In addition to the art project Ask Your Scent, Park held a workshop entitled “Making Family Clocks Using Photo Images” and heard various stories from the participants. She says she is increasingly concerned with the issues about families. Through her projects and exhibitions at ACAC, she must have added a lot to her collection. They will produce more questions or new works of art in the future.

This work starts with a single question "If there is a spirit in each piece of material, What is it that it really wants?" As an answer to discarded containers in the middle of the room that have the ultimate desire of returning to nature. In the center of containers, powderd leaves are placed to symbolize nature.

Park have collected glass of bottles which peoples threw away, and make a big incense buner with natural incense powders. It means some hope of these bottle(trash) which hope to be a nature like a living cretures after life. It looks like a big altar.
There are fillled with smell which these natural incense powders made in the gallery.

사람들이 만들어놓은 문명의 이기들은 사람들이 자연으로 돌아가는 100년의 시간보다 이 땅에 훨씬 오래 머무르게된다.

먼 훗날 사람들이 이 오염된 별을 떠나게 된다면 결국 텅 빈 지구를 지키는 것은 바로 이 버려진 쓰레기들일 것이다. 인간은

쓰레기 더미를 남기고 그들은 이 오염된 별에서 다시 자연으로 돌아갈 날을 홀로 남아 오랜 시간을 기다려야만 한다.

'버려진 쓰레기들이 땅에 남아 바라는 것이 무엇일까.'를 생각해본다.

버려진 유리병들에 '자연을 향한 그리움'을 담았다.

각각의 유리병에 연결된 전구열은 유리병에 담긴 나무 껍질들의 향 香을 불러일으킨다.

비록 모습은 버려진 유리병이지만 자신들이 향기는 자연의 향을 바라지 않았을까.

버려진 유리병들이 만든 자연을 향한 그리움을 담은 향로香爐 인셈이다.

This work has been done by scratching a transparent acryl board by hand with needle, line by line, through a kind of etching work. To express the vagueness of a memory, water is used.
As a shadow drawing, whose clearness and size are decided by the lighting, the images are projected on a blank wall.

I have drawn some image of past only. because the past already have passed and only memory remains with people.

그림자 소묘

2008년 부터 시작한 작업으로 투명 아크릴 판에 한선 한선 바늘과 칼을 사용해서 스크래치를 넣는 일종의 에칭 작업으로, 기억의 희미한 느낌을 나타내기 위해 물이나 수증기 혹은 햇빛을 사용했다. 결국 조명에 의해 그림자의 선명도나 크기가 결정되는 그림자 드로잉으로 아무것도 없는 벽면에 투사된다.

주로 과거의 이미지만을 그리는데, 과거란 시간은 이미 지나가 버려 추억과 같은 기억으로만 존재하는 것이 마치 그림자의 느낌과 비슷하기 때문이다.

'환경'에 대한 전시로 5월 어린이 체험 전시 겸 기획된 전시에 참가합니다.

저는 수집한 재활용 유리병들에 기존에 미리 채집한 나무가루(향)와 조명을 설치해서 일종의 향로들로 구성된 설치작업들을

선보이고 있습니다. (2층) 아이들이 많이 보는 체험전시이기 때문에 작품들이 손이 닿지 않는 천정에 설치됐습니다.

사람들이 만들어놓은 문명의 이기들은 사람들이 자연으로 돌아가는 100년의 시간보다 이 땅에 훨씬 오래 머무르게된다.

녹은 쇠를 먹고 산다.

세상에 변하지 않는 것은 없다.

사랑은 결혼과 함께 책임과 희생이 되고

이루지 못한 꿈이 고스라니 내 아이의 꿈이 된다.

나의 이름은 아이 엄마가 되었고

아이의 시간이 나의 시간이 된다.

나를 보호하던 집은 어느새 나를 가두는 공간이자 머리가 되어 나를 움직이게 한다.

누구나 다 그렇게 사는 것이라고

특별한 삶은 없다고 위로해 보지만

Mapping Tree- part I Love & Marrige

This project which intends to attain the answers about curiosity into the life of the participants’ in the questionnaire has continued to ask advices of the experts from various fields like women’s studies, psychology, mental science, the art of conversation and so on, following one expert’s advice after another since 2009. The advices have different forms like the letter from a matchmaker, the discourse and the evaluation sheet from the doctors, and the amulet from a diviner. The project will be continued with a theme on meaningful value or dream, the essential things to human life buried in oblivion in the rapidly changing world.

I start the story of Love & Marrige. first I chose one story about Love(of cause it's nonfiction) and looked for a pertinentspecialist, take their advice. then I looked for next specialist again, ask their opinion too. these process were repeat and repeat. ans I added my opinion every step with various way (music, object, perfume, research. neon sign, text....) this work is a certain of chain story. so I named Mapping Tree.

Peoples keep on living by their own speed. Time seems to be given everyone same but the everybody has a different life speed.
150 peoples are surrounding peoples of mine. like a family, friend, co-woker...
and I made their birth year & name into the minute hand and the second hand. some people have the hour hand, it's death year. it means their life over. so thier life's clock stop now. What am I moving for? How long time am I moving on this life ? And where am I in my life?

but every valuable thing is always in the unvisualble place...

sometimes there is a some play it makes me realize the past. I can feel a child mind remained in my mind. peoples can make a sound pushing these strings which have different sounds. this work was a kind of participating work, It sounds like a korean traditional musical instrument.
가 끔은 과거의 시간을 떠올리게 하는 놀이들이 있다.

This work was for the blind people. so I used only white color material. and emphasized the sense of hearing & touch with matiere and sound. because usually they are more superior on these senses than ordinary peoples.

As time goes by, peoples lost their dear peoples like a friend or family.
One day, I realized i'm alone.
"Where have the people gone?"
I thought about that..
It's because only jealousy or self-respect, or time flies or so different life style. or peoples have passed away...
sometimes no reason..

this work is for the blind people. so I used different kinds of material which have various touch feeling like a soft cloth, wire, rubber.. every string has different sound. I made a some sound play area.
It looks like a play hide- and-seek in my childhood.
The play hide- and-seek is search for the friend, and finally I could find my friend, but nowaday I'm not sure I'll be able to find my lost friend again...

사람들은 시간이 지나면서 가족이나 친구같은 자신들의 소중한 사람들을 잃어버린다.
그리고 어느 순간 내 주변의 친구들은 사라지고 혼로 남은 나를 발견한다.
"사람들이 어디로 가버렸을까?"
때론 질투심으로, 자존심 때문에 . 그냥 시간이 흘러서, 삶이 너무 달라서, 먼저 세상을 떠나서
그리고 때로는 아무 이유없이 떠나고 떠나온 사람들..

이 작품은 시각장애인을 위한 전시이다. 그들을 위해 다양한 촉감의 재료들을 사용했는데 특히 여러 종류의 줄을 사용했다. 천이나 고무줄 같은.. 그러한 선들을 이용한 공간을 만들었는데, 관객들은 줄들을 이용해 소리를 내어 볼 수 있다. 전체적으로 그림은 마치 어린시절 숨바꼭질 놀이와 비슷하다.
숨바꼭질은 친구들을 찾는 놀이이고, 난 결국 친구들을 찾아냈지만, 지금 나는 잃어버린 그들을 다시 찾을 수 있을까...

When our ordinary life and people around us disappear, then we realize about what their dignity is. The importance of family of people with no family or the longing for home of people wandering from place to place is an earnest desire that people in daily life don’t know. The home we’re living in is a dream of the roaming people who search for that during their whole life.

잃어버린 아이들의 숲

사소하고, 평범하고, 당연해서 이젠 익숙해져 버려 그 존재마저 희미하게 느끼는 일상과 사람들은 그 존재가 사라지게 되면 그 소중함을 알게 된다. 가족을 잃은 사람이 느끼는 가족의 소중함과 갈 곳을 모르고 정처 없이 헤매는 사람들이 느끼는 집에 대한 그리움은 일상을 사는 사람들의 것보다는 절실하며 진지하고 서글프다. 당 신의 집은(Home) 여기 떠도는 이들이 평생을 찾아 헤매야만 하는 꿈이다.

Forget Me Not _ paraffin, underwater light_ variable size_2009

The Little Match Girl by Andersen is a novel to reveal the human’s yearning for home. We can feel that our daily life is a dream for the people with no home through the story of the poor girl who spent the chill night in Christmas Eve with a tiny candle light yearning for a home filled with warmth. Miserably, the girl’s dream was unattainable and I metaphorically projected the girl’s dream on the forget-me-not. (the flowers on the water is made by scallop-かぃ, a special product from Aomori. The underwater lights make different spectacle in the night.

HOME에 대한 간절함은 아마도 안데르센의 동화 ‘성냥팔이 소녀’의 것이 가장 절실할 것이라고 생각했다. 크리스마스 이브저녁 추운 겨울 작은 불꽃 하나를 의지해서 몸을 녹이며 따뜻한 가정을 꿈꾸던 어린 소녀의 모습에서 우리가 당연시 여기는 평범한 일상이 방황하며 헤매는 이들에겐 얼마나 커다란 꿈인지를 느끼게 한다. 하지만 소녀는 꿈을 이루지 못했고, 그 간절함을 ‘나 를 잊지 말라’는 꽃 말을 가진 물망초로 은유화했다. (물 위에 띄운 꽃들은 아오모리의 특산물인 가리비를 이용해서 만들었다. 밤이 되면 설치한 수중 조명들로 다른 풍경을 볼 수 있다)

The Forest of Missing Children _Scratching on acrylic plate, natural light, variable size, 2009

This is an etching using knife, needle, and transparent acrylic plate and installed on the field in AOMORI Contemporary Art Center. The scratching on the plate appears in silhouette by light, and then the viewers can realize the shape of the scratching. The silhouette is created by light only, and the shape might be distorted and disappear depending on position and direction of the sunlight. The real form of the silhouette would appear in a moment. The faces of 32 children from the searching sites for missing-child in South Korea and Japan are painted on the plate. The children still don’t return to their home as the faces rotate between appearance and disappearance.

AOMORI Contemporary Art Center의 야외 스텐드에 설치한 작품으로 투명 아크릴판에 칼과 바늘을 이용한 일종의 에칭 소묘이다. 투명한 판에 새겨진 그림(흠집)들은 빛에 의해 그림자로 나타나며 사람들은 비로서 그림의 형체를 알 수 있다. 오직 빛에 의해서만 그림들이 나타나고 태양의 위치와 방향에 따라 그림은 왜곡되어 나타나거나 없어지며, 오직 한 순간만이 정상적인 모습을 볼 수 있다. 여기엔 한국과 일본의 미아찾기 사이트에서 찾은 24명의 실종된 아이들의 모습이 그려져 있으며, 여전히 가족들과 떨어져 서로를 애타게 찾고 있는 이들은 빛에 따라 나타났다 사라지기를 반복하는 이 그림들처럼 아직 만나지 못했다.

Beautiful Sorrow

<Beautiful Sorrow> salt, tree 200*230*200(h)cm installed inside the salina in Trapani, Sicily 2007

The sky, sea and the mountains of Sicily were very beautiful. However, different from the nature, the city was desolate, people were poor and tired. The quite city surrounded by beautiful landscape looked very sad and beautiful to me, like the snowflake in the winter.
This piece is a salt tree made from salt, a noted product of Trapani. I wanted to create the feelings of a snowflake and installed it in the middle of a salt farm. Then with salt, I created the head of the last woman, the wife of Lott, of the disappeared city Sodom and Gomorrah, and put it in the middle of the tree branches.
(the sea color at the salina changes every moment. the pink color means salt almost be done.)

하얗게 내리던 눈은 땅에 닿는 순간부터 더러워진다. 때문에 땅에는 그들의 검은 눈물이 흐른다.
한국의 어머니들은 참음으로 그들의 인생을 보낸다.
때문에 그들의 눈물없는 슬픔은 사람들의 마음을 더욱 아프게한다.
롯의* 아내는 분명히 아름다운 여인이었을 것이다. 그녀는 수많은 재능과 부유한 삶을 살았을 것이다.
때문에 한번에 그 모든 것을 포기하기 힘들었을지 모른다.
누가 그녀를 탓할 수 있을까.
나 또한 그러한 인생 속에 있는 것을..
얼마나 많은 날들이 모이면, 저 넓은 바다를 소금으로 채울 수 있을까..
세상의 모든 아름다운 슬픔을 위해서..

사진엔 어떤 camera work도 주지 않았으며, 염전의 색은 매 순간 변한다. 핑크색은 이제 소금을 수확때를 의미한다.

They are my works before The Locked Room(5th solo exhibition 2008). Over time, I discovered myself wandering in the disharmony between the environment and the existence. They include the disharmony found in the one which had existed but disappeared, had been mine but not anymore and the place in which I exist but I don’t belong. Looking at my figure, which has my figure but is not me, I think about what has been vanished while I was not aware of.
Just when I become realized, putting on years, that invisible things make me more like me, they were already gone.

- This work is installed in the window, at the end of 20 meter length- hallway, on the fifth floor of DiArt Gallery, Sicily, Italy.
As soon as you step into the hallway, you can see another door is being closed outside the window, hiding a dark space behind. As you approach, you can see someone’s movement in the dark space. And after all, when you are right in front of the door, you become realized that the person in that dark room was you.

Like this, disappearing things show their figures just a little, before they totally hide themselves. This window frame is installed in the window of hallway on the fifth floor of DiArt Gallery in Sicily, Italy. The engraved patters are borrowed from the door of the prayer room of a cathedral in this city.
I hope ‘the original I’ could catch it before I disappear..
I named this work after my best Sicilian friend Liliana Amplo

Daily routine is boring and it’s the same for everybody. People no longer find any beauty, surprises or pleasure in it.

But if people break away their routine, they come to realize the value of daily life.

It isn’t that they didn’t know the value, it’s just that they couldn’t see it by themselves, because they are inside it.

The routine of the Trapani people is very new to me, because I’m a stranger.

If you look at your daily life in detail, you can see it’s beauty,.

If you look at it for a long time, you can feel it’s loveliness.

I am creating new work here, but from a stranger’s view point.

Conceptual & Performance (30 kinds of pure perfume) at the SEJONG ART center 2005

관객의 심리테스트를 통해 자신의 향을 찾아주는 일종의 개념 퍼포먼스 작업 (30여가지의 향료, 혼합재료)

Concept We often liken one’s personality to a scent. With this idea in mind, my project started from the question “Which scent do you have?” Or as a poet might put it, “Many people have no scent any more.” Instead, people delete their personality for success and a stable life. This project has been ongoing since 2005. With it I have already made and stored the scent of 2,000 Korean people.

Process This work consists of a performance to produce the scent of viewers, <Perfume Storage> for keeping the produced scents, and <People’s Fragrance>, an installation to distill the collected body odors.

Ask Your Scent – performance, 30 perfumes, psychological test sheet.

Each viewer submits the written result of an image-based psychological test to the perfumer, that is, the artist. The perfumer then begins making perfume based on these results. Each viewer’s constellation-perfume and bloody-type perfume are also added. (In the East, people often believe blood type reflects a person’s character and disposition.)

The resulting perfumes will be made by blending 5-8 odors, and will be named by the artist. As with conventional perfume, it will contain natural and chemical ingredients, but unlike conventional perfume, it will invite viewers to consider their disposition while viewing the process of making perfume, (and so dislikable perfumes will sometimes be made.) While making each perfume, the perfumer will ask questions of viewers so the perfume reflects their disposition and personality.

Perfume Storage – perfume (perfume bottles), lighting. Perfume, produced in Ask Your Scent, will be kept in 20ml bottles.

The viewer’s name, his or her blood type, the perfume ingredients, and constellation, will be written and posted on the bottles. People will be allowed to smell each perfume.

People’s Fragrance – gathered body odor, glass bottles for experimentation, lighting, variable sizes.

The body odors will be gathered while producing each person’s perfume. They will be contained in a laboratory grade glass bottle for distillation. People will be allowed to smell each distilled perfume.

I have attended Group VISION for 1998. I have tried various works which I wished to make it some day.

I comtinued to try with another artist, and I have installed some works at public space or outdoor space not private gallery.

조 각그룹 飛는 98년부터 참여한 조각그룹으로 2000년 부터는 다양한 공간적 실험을 해오고 있다.

飛展에서 하는 작업들은 '깊이'를 다루는 나의 주된 작업에서 벗어나 평소에 한번쯤은 해보고 싶던 작업들의 실험의 장이었다.

따라서 때론 공동 작업으로 때론 갤러리가 아닌 공공의 장소에서 작업이 진행되고 있는데, 飛展을 통해 잠시 다른 공간의 숨을 쉴 수 있었다.

Sometimes I have forgotten breathing myself. but if I'm inside water, my desire for life would be more increased.

때론 숨을 쉬고 있다는 사실을 잊을 때가 많다. 하지만 물속에 들어가는 삶에 대한 갈망은 더 커진다.

This work was inspired from novel 'the keys of the kingdom' written by A.J Cronin.

the kingdom open to every one but It's not mean to allow everyone. follow your mind. when you hesitate, at that moment the dooor'll be closed.

이 작품은 A.J 크로닌의 소설 '천국의 열쇠'를 보고 난 느낌을 재현한 것이었다.

천국은 모두에게 열려있지만 모두가 갈 수 있는 곳은 아니다.

속삭이는 마음에 솔직해 보라 . 망설이는 순간 문은 닫혀 버린다.

Eclipsis in kassel 2007

When an audience stand on the back of the light..
they can find the message from artist on the wall .

People can read this under their own shadow only.

"You will come to the heart of Germany

only to read the word

ART

under your own shadow.."

this work makes people smile..
