The Busan Museum of Art's special exhibition <So Beautiful> was designed to convey the message of comfort and healing that art provides to us living in the era of COVID-19, and to awaken the courage to face a new era. The work <Late Farewell> presented at the exhibition is intended to convey condolences to the bereaved families who have not seen the deathbed or to have a funeral omitted in the era of COVID-19, and to convey the message that it is okay to express sorrow without hiding. This is the second mourning project in collaboration with the Busan Ilbo. This mourning project consists of a 'Late Farewell' series using obituaries and newspapers of those with underlying medical conditions, including those who have died of COVID-19, and a ‘Unfamiliar Farewell' series, which shows the missed death and 'missing funerals'. In the 'Late ' series, the stories that the bereaved families investigated through surveys and direct coverage were collected and written as obituaries in the Busan Ilbo, and the Full Story was produced and displayed as an archival print at the exhibition hall.

The Death for 1 Year_2021_180x200cm_Compilation of obituaries collected from 2017 to 2018, Ink, stemp

In general obituaries in Korea, only information such as the name of the deceased, the name of the bereaved family, occupation, and presence of children is recorded. We Korean don't know who the deceased was before or what the bereaved family thinks of the deceased, but only how many children he has had and what he has accomplished during his lifetime.

The warmth of family I had read in a Swedish newspaper is nowhere to be found. I couldn't read Swedish, but I could feel the affection of my family. South Korea's obituary is no different from a microcosm of achievement-oriented South Korea. By using a number stamp on obituaries collected over the course of a year, I wanted to tell the mourning culture of Korea that focuses only on achievements.

""Today, ceremonies tend to disappear. Even when someone in the family dies, people are in a hurry to resume their usual activities as soon as the funeral is over. (...) Not only when a person dies, but also when there is an <event of closure> such as when a person leaves a job or place of life, mourning is necessary (...) , as if the roots of weeds were not pulled out properly, the aftermath of the incident lasts for a long time.”

- ‘On the Importance of Mourning’ by Bernard Werber

The works were displayed in two spaces, and installation works to mourn and comfort the deceased and bereaved family were placed in the inner space. The work 'Time to Bloom' is a work that compares the 'last moment' when bereaved families are deprived of a flower. I thought it resembled the feelings of the villagers and their families. Flowers with peaks are placed in the exhibition hall, and the current time and calendar are displayed and operated. When a flower blooms, withers, or death is determined, the clock stops, records the time the flower died, and then moves to the opposite 'Oasis Altar' when the flower dries.

_DSC9478-1.jpg

Flowers are thrown away when they wither. People do not watch the appearance of dead flowers and the moment it die. Just like the families of those who died from Corona.

Flowers with peaks, flip clocks, and calendars are displayed in the exhibition hall. (Clock and calendar are real time)
When a flower is in full bloom, withers, and it is judged 'dead', the clock is stopped and the time when the flower died is recorded.

After that, when the flowers are dry, they are moved to the 'Oasis Altar'.

Funerals were also omitted by the bereaved family members who could not see the deathbed. Corona deaths go through cremation-first and funeral-afterward procedures, but most of the bereaved families are not able to inform their close acquaintances of the death, cry out loud, receive no comfort, and live worrying about criticism from those around them. . Before criticizing them, I tried to paradoxically express the hope that they are 'people who have lost their loved ones' and the sadness of having to leave their loved ones with dry tears by providing an empty 'altar of mourning'. The altar, which should have been filled with flowers, was filled with only a withered oasis and dead flowers whose end was written.

'The funeral of someone who was forcibly omitted because he could not put a flower on it..'

After the exhibition, an interactive page was opened in the Busan Ilbo, a partner organization, where ordinary citizens can post obituaries.
