Where, In What From, Shall We Meet Again (subtitle: I’d Rather Get Beaten Up Than Being Alone)_2021_ burnt fax(survey) paper using fire stamp (survey paper)__120x170cm(each)

1

If we call separation, we can't help it, a farewell, and if we say goodbye to separation with our own strength, we had to do the work of this ‘star’ twice, which we always wished was not of the Earth. While the former word of farewell stirs existence to prevent it from arriving anywhere at will, like a roar, the word of the latter, the start, spurred recognition, choice, and decision about the turmoil and struggles. Then, perhaps the responsibility this star gave to beings is not to reach or have to reach somewhere, but rather to create these waves. After all these many days and so many of you, what I finally realized is not that I have the power to send you away, but that there are so many of you that I still have enough to leave even after I have sent you all away. Therefore, from the fact that there are things that cannot only be erased but will never be erased, a certain kind of belief is bound to arise. Eternity? In the place where people think that such a sentimental word may not exist in the world anymore, events that would be unbelievable as parting, and again believed as farewell, occur. In this way, though the love between us has been broken, the love I felt remains here eternally.

Even though the sentence to confess love inevitably begins with the individuality of ‘you (only you)’, if you have no choice but to rely on the concepts of ‘eternity’ —in the sense that you and I have the same heart, or that the love we share is ‘that’ love that the world knows in common— and ‘universal’, on the contrary, parting is not only a relationship of discord between eternity and universality, but also Furthermore, it will be an adversarial relationship. Even though we had to keep silence when we say, ‘How can possibly love change,’ and as a competent scholar says, ‘There is no sex’, parting devotes itself even in the midst of saying that there is no longer anything eternal and universal. However, Eternal and Universal, which tried to escape from the prison of existence when parting is littered with farewells, are again sentenced to life in the prison. Saying farewell does not leave everything behind, but everything that remains exists perfectly. The word ‘eternity’, which was used to preserve something for the sake of love, now engages in parting with something immortalized ‘forever’. Love, which began inevitably on the concreteness of ‘you (only you)’, now solidifies only in abstraction and universality, since there is no ‘you’. At that moment, farewell feels so unfamiliar that it resembles love terribly.

When parting becomes farewell, that is, there is a relationship between eternity and universality, where they hold their breath for a while and then bloom again. It is such a time to be together in the Things Said at Breakups series curated by Hyesoo Park. At the very beginning, there is Things Said at Breakups (2021). She conducted Goodbye to Love (2013~) and collected the stories of the audience and the items left by ex-lovers through the survey Memorabilia of Broken Heart. Afterwards, in 2021, she collected additional words handed to (or received) from lovers when they parted with a survey Things Said at Breakups, and compiled an essay with photos of the ex-lovers' items taken by Hyoungtae Lim. Hyesoo Park wrote here: “‘Are you willing to be hurt for someone's sake?’/‘If that's the case... love is yours.’” (p. 11), thanks to her work, I found out the identity of the heart that will lead Where, in what from, shall we meet again (2021). As if in response to the previous words, this work is filled with the phrases, “It is better to be beaten than to be alone”. That heart must have been willing to choose self-destruction. A line from the movie Memories of Matsuko definitely came to me like that.

For Matsuko in the movie, love has always been one with misfortune, but nevertheless, she longed for love for the rest of her life. Even in moments of suffering from abuse from her loved one, she repeated, “It’s better to be beaten than to be alone”, and even though parting casts doubt on eternity and universality, she dares to fold it in the form of farewell. If we can't end up hating her abhorrent Matsuko, it’s probably because in her, we find a willingness to be hurt. Just like a fragile picture, amorphous as water, which shines under the light and the shining soon disappears as the light accumulates, love also has a premonition that someone will leave because of the accumulation of love, and there is a reason that the leave will hurt. We pretend that we do not know this principle, but everyone is well aware of this fact. So, in fact, what the existence approved was not that we would not be hurt, but that we would surely receive it from our loving ones. After Hyesoo Park folded the paper crane (Origami) with her questionnaire answer paper, she unfolded it and burned it with a fire stamp. Farewell. There are moments when the word to live with love turns into death—with love—or the point in time when the difference between the two words is no longer felt. The eyes that meet those moments seem like a color of ink that is so heartbreaking.

A love that is willing to choose the wounds created by premonition and reason, and a farewell that puts eternity and universals back in their place to make it possible. You will not know whether this is self-righteousness or sadism. However, she only knows that work is ‘making a bruise of the heart’. In that sense, the work distances itself from the lack of or addiction that has forgotten violence. How cruel a relationship can be is attested by the bruises of these massive charred ashes. Nevertheless, as far as knowing one thing, the bruises couldn't fill the entire screen. Bruising occurs on every screen as if it will burn traces, memories, and emotions, but only one sentence is left unburned. Rather, it was there from the beginning as an interline, while the paper was folded and unfolded for love and the whole body scorched with parting. It is only revealed at the end by remaining there while everything else is being erased. Neither the artist nor us try to rectify this confrontation. Rather, we can only hope that the situation is ‘eternity’.

The reason that magnolia and peach blossoms cannot be counted as two when each exists is because the number cannot be individually counted. Just as it is possible to count only the number of magnolias or only the number of drawings, the number is achieved only through identity. Therefore, the breakup in the breakup story collected by Hyesoo Park is not about how many breakups exist, but how many different breakups exist. So we cannot say goodbye to others. Therefore, the artist has no choice but to say farewell, not farewell. When we finally decide to lose the individual ‘you’ at the point of parting, we see the universal return as if all the stories in the work turned their backs and revealed themselves in one sentence. The universal love that you and I had the same or that the love we had had in common with all the people in the world was turned to the back by the breakup, but as if there was no individual (myself), we endured all the pain that might come, The universal as an abstraction that accepts only love for love, a love in which you don’t exist, comes to the fore as a farewell. People will always ask, ‘Am I even alive that way?’, but I will be just fine without you.

If this star’s duty to being was to create waves like knots that are tied and untied, then this rhythm would be like all living beings barely trying to come to life. The wrinkles and curves on the surface of Things Said at Breakups are sometimes swells and look like a silvery night sea. It is because it senses the future light. I always wanted to use the word ‘beauty’ for a being who was determined to suffer pain to escape from what it is, despite the risk that there will be times when the person wants to let go of oneself and want to collapse together like you who disappeared. We were pitiful for a while because of the pattern we lost to ‘beauty’, but we will be lovable for a long time. Hyesoo Park built parting with that pattern. So, she found the moment “if possible, show them something they cherish, what they are” (p. 158), not in a time of meeting or ecstasy, but in a time of broken heart. Because I want to confess to myself, I am only now saying goodbye. When parting becomes farewell and let's add one more here. When farewell becomes a work of art.
